MST-77, segment 2

Waterrock Knob to BRP Maintenance Area near US 74, eastbound

August 12, 2025. Second day of hiking in this area, and again I chose to go in the direction that gave me more downhill than up, so it was eastbound for 9.6 miles.

The Waterrock Knob parking area was enshrouded in mist when the husband-shuttle dropped me off at 7:30am.

I guess that the view can be splendid!

Shortly after leaving Waterrock Knob the mist solidified into rain.

I navigated all the stairs, rocks, and roots very, very slowly and carefully.

At least it wasn’t a chilly rain–the temperature was around 70, so it didn’t matter too much to get a little wet.

I took frequent breaks to hydrate and rest the leg muscles, which were still pretty sore from yesterday’s hike.

Forget about keeping the feet dry!

There were two sections today where I hiked right along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but traffic was very light.

Every now and then the MST-hiker gets to play Limbo!

American Cancer-root (Conophalis americana), a parasitic plant

The second half of the hike was much easier. The rain let up, and the trail widened and smoothed out.

Two miles were along a gently descending gravel road. A kind lady stopped and asked if I needed a ride. My bedraggled appearance must engender sympathy!

One last mile through the woods.

You know you’re getting near to civilization when you start seeing benches!

Fall is almost here in the mountains!

And back to the BRP Maintenance Area, where I also finished yesterday’s hike.

The husband-shuttle arrived later than expected, because a tree had fallen on the BRP, blocking his return!

Time to celebrate two successful days of hiking!
