Waves to Pea Island north, eastbound

May 20, 2025. On the second day of this beach-hiking trip, I did 13.25 miles.

We closed out our stay at Sarah’s Airbnb, and at 6am I left through the backyard in Waves to head back to the MST route.

Good morning, beach!

The only major landmark was the Rodanthe Pier, about one mile north of Waves.

Rodanthe has been hit hard by hurricanes and ocean-rise.

The trail guide said there were facilities here at the Rodanthe Beach Access point, but maybe it’s still the off-season, a week before Memorial Day.

I wonder how high the insurance rates on this residence are….

No bird-nesting detours today!

AND, I drank more and took more mini-breaks, as well.

At the time, I thought this was a real fish!

Shoes-off break at 8 miles. It was a very pleasant day–not too hot. After this hike I have 20 miles to go to finish up Segment 18, which I plan to do in June when we’re in Nags Head for a family vacation.

The route exits the beach here at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.

Very happy to be back on terra firma!
I’ve been here at Pea Island several times before, but usually in winter when there’s tens of thousands of waterfowl.

It’s a couple of miles to walk around on the dikes. I was worried about snakes in the tall grass, but all I saw was a deer and a fox.

Loren spotted me with his telephoto lens!

And what are the birders happy about?

A Salt Marsh Sparrow!
