MST-41 (segment 8)

Townsend Trail on Yanceyville Road to Oak Ridge Methodist Church, westbound

September 9. I hiked 18.4 miles, with another gracious shuttle by Trail Angel Chris.

Incredibly, the first ELEVEN MILES of this hike were on actual TRAIL!

And all eleven miles were along Lake Townsend, and then Lake Brandt.

The trail was beautifully maintained, with thoughtful boardwalks and footbridges.

Short stretches of roadway connected various segments of the trail system.

A species of Beggartick, whose seeds easily attach to fur (or clothing!)
Absolutely no route-finding difficulties in this section!
A terrifying amount of Kudzu

The trail went moderately up and down, which made for engaging, interesting hiking and splendid views of the lakes.

A Gray Catbird scolded me from the bushes. They will be migrating soon.

After leaving the trail there was a mile along the A&Y Greenway (built on the abandoned Atlantic & Yadkin railway bed)

The mural in the tunnel under US-220 was created by local high school students.

Back to familiar roadside walking, through Summerfield.

This freight shed is what remains of the former A&Y depot here in Summerfield.

On Brookbank Road traffic was finally light enough to be able to read my “morning” devotional.

My car was parked at the hospitable Oak Ridge Methodist Church. As I took my hiking boots off, I realized that my feet had been pain-free throughout the long hike, with no discomfort whatsoever.

These worked great!!!!!
