MST-40 (segments 8 &9)

Townsend Trail on Yanceyville Road to Guilford County Farm, eastbound

September 3. I hiked eastbound 19.4 miles, after leaving my car at Guilford County Farm and getting a shuttle from the most-helpful Trail Angel Chris.

7:20 a.m.
MUCH cooler temperature than the last hike!

The first 3.7 miles were on this section of the Townsend Trail in segment 8, and it was really lovely.

Lake Townsend
Eastern North American Destroying Angel (Amanita bisporigera)

One recent windfall–I’ve reported it. Otherwise, this trail was in really good shape, with no flooded areas despite the recent storm.

Lots of pretty views! It was like being back along Falls Lake in segment 10, which is where I began my MST adventure.

Beechdrop (Epifagus virginiana)
A parasitic plant growing up from the roots of American Beech trees

It was an abrupt transition whenever the trail broke out of the woods!

Somebody has a sweet set-up here!

Thank you, trail volunteers, for these incredible footbridges! This one looked brand new.

The Townsend Trail ended at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex.

Bryan Park is the transition point between segments 8 and 9.

Bryan Park Road winds gracefully next to a beautifully-situated golf course.

I always brake for history!

At Summit Avenue and US 29 my printed directions, FarOut, and what was before me were NOT in alignment, due to a lot of recent road construction. It took a bit of futzing around to navigate through safely.

I was happy to get to a friendly sidewalk along Reedy Fork Parkway.

An artistic beginning to the Hines Chapel Preserve!

The 1.5 mile Grande Peninsula Trail was opened just last year, in May.

The flat rock at the parking area was a great place to rest before beginning 10 miles of road walking.

Most of the roads were low-traffic.

Inspiration for every aspect of life–including long hikes!

Kudzu, trying its best to take over the world before the first frost.

One mile to go on Howerton Road!

And that completes segment 9–with the exception of the easternmost five miles, which I’m saving for the very very end of the MST, since it goes by my house and I’m planning a big celebration.

Because I want to . . .

  1. Thanks for taking us along this piece of segments 8 & 9. Still, some significant mileage. Thank God for tolerable weather!
