MST-18

Possum Track Road to Raven Ridge Road

April 5. Loop hike, with 6 miles of trail, and 2 miles back on roads. The penultimate hike of Section 10!

Parking was roadside, as was the first little stretch of MST, in order to cross Cedar Creek Inlet.

Looking out, a pretty view.

Looking down, not so nice.

The beginning of the “trail” was actually this section of culvert. That was a first.

Look at all the trees leafing out!
Christmas Fern “fiddleheads”
Sweetgum
American Beech
Azure Bluet (Houstonia caeruiea)

There were so many interesting plants to photograph and new birdsongs to listen to, I made astonishing slow progress!

This area had been logged in 2020. Red-headed Woodpeckers were busy in the snags at the edges.

Follow the little white dot
Follow the little white dot.
Follow, follow, follow, follow
Follow the little white dot!

The route exited the woods for a short stretch along a private gravel road.

Wild Comfrey or Blue Houndstongue (Andersonglossum virginianum)

Henrietta’s bench was on a little dike between a large pond and a Falls Lake inlet.

Some day I’ll figure out exactly where you’re supposed to look when you take a selfie!

The peace of the woods was disturbed for nearly a mile by the sound of riding lawn mowers, up at the McMansions.

Oh, I was sad to see this Red-bellied Woodpecker. I hear them often in the woods–they have a loud, distinct squawky call that’s easy to identify.

The last little bit is along Raven Ridge Road….

…to this trailhead, which is my turnaround point for today.

And it will be where my final hike on Section 10 begins next time!

She thought she hadn’t read
any poetry lately
but she looked around
the trail she was hiking
and saw Creation’s perfect verse
musing.
