MST-17

Bayleaf Church Road to Possum Track Road

April 2. It’s been a while since I had an out-and-back hike with no stretches of roadway, and this one was only a little over 6 miles. But it was HOT for early April, so 6 miles was plenty.

All of these things were left behind in the car!

I’m wearing my summer shirt—and also shorts!

The start of the trail was within a NC State parks facility, so hikers have to park up the road, outside the gate (although the gate was open today).

This time there WAS a pen so I could sign the trail register without using a stick and mud.

Coyotes use the bridges, too.

A bit of a tight squeeze, here on the MST!
Too early for the Laurel to be blooming, but this will be really pretty in May.

Today, what IS blooming is Azure Bluet (Houstonia caerulea).

Christmas Ferns, sprouting new growth
Wee little Sweetgum
Fan Clubmoss, which isn’t a moss at all, but a “groundcedar”

I skirted several smaller inlets, with an occasional view of Falls Lake.

Lots of pollen this time of year!

This more open area was near an abandoned homesite. It was probably once cleared for pasture.

I heard Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Northern Parulas (a species of warbler). Spring migration is here!

Normally I like making these little side trips, just out of curiosity, but the camping area was .3 miles off-trail, and I decided against it.

Because it’s pretty warm hiking today and I don’t feel like doing anything extra.
Note to self: Increase water supply!

Possum Track Road, the not-very-exciting turnaround point.

As usual, I backtrack to a better place for a quick snack and drink break.

May his strength sustain me in my trials,
his blessings revive me in my weariness.
