Enshrouded in Cloud

AVERY
Grassy Ridge Knob

(#49/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

Yesterday we followed the Appalachian Trail south from Carver’s Gap to the Mitchell highpoint, but today we’re heading north, 2.4 miles on the AT into Avery County.

Here’s one highpointer’s description:

The hike was gorgeous from the very start,
meadows stretching in every direction
and views like I’d never seen before in the southeast.

That was not our experience, however.

We were enveloped in a windy cloud!

After passing over both Round Knob and Jane Knob, the final ascent was through a rhododendron tunnel to the summit of Grassy Ridge Knob.

“The views from up here are simply astounding”

But we are still happy!

Ok, now I’m not so happy…

But on the return hike to the car, the cloud began to lift!

Happiness is restored!

  1. I enjoy seeing places in North Carolina, that I never visited, like a section of the Appalachian Trail, and a memorial to someone who was born and was buried on the mountain.
