Windy Walk

Huckleberry Knob

5560′

(#37/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

On September 6, 1900, Forrest Denton was hunting deer in the Unicoi Mountain Range when he stumbled upon the animal-mangled remains of two bodies.

Andy Sherman and Paul O’Neil had left their logging camp on December 11, 1899, heading to Robbinsville for Christmas. They never made it. Several empty jugs of whiskey were found nearby, and although the liquor may been a temporary comfort, it did nothing to keep the two men from freezing to death on Huckleberry Knob.

We heed this precautionary tale and bundle up with our winter coats and hats, because although it is the first of MAY, this is one cold and windy mountain!

It’s a two-mile round trip hike from the parking area off the Cherohala Parkway. The route goes up and over Oak Knob, but Huckleberry Knob is higher, so that’s our final destination.

The trees have yet to bud out, but there are a few early spring wildflowers in bloom.

Wood Anemone

Thyme-leaved Bluet, Hobblebush, Wild Geranium

From Oak Knob we’re halfway to Huckleberry Knob.

We pause at the grave of Andy Sherman. Paul O’Neil’s skeleton was given to a doctor for a medical exhibit. (I think Andy has the better resting place!)

Brrrrr! We don’t linger!
Looking down toward Oak Knob and the way back to the car

Unlike Andy and Paul in 1899, we have a clear trail to follow!
