Misty MST

HENDERSON
Little Pisgah Mountain, 5280′

(#12/100 North Carolina highpoints)

One of the most popular hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway is the 2.5 mile hike up Mount Pisgah, which is visible from Asheville.

BUT…Mount Pisgah is on the border of Buncombe and Haywood Counties and is the highpoint of neither, so it would be Just-an-Ordinary-Hike. We’ll save that for another day.

OUR goal is LITTLE PISGAH MOUNTAIN, on the MST (Mountain to the Sea Trail). Same parking lot, different trails. Ours was historic!

We began in the sunshine and ended in the mist.

But it didn’t matter much, since we were in the forest for the whole hike–and in any case, there was no view from the top, even if the cloud had not descended upon us.

Looking back down the trail

Won’t those rhododendrons be pretty in spring?

Following our route directions, we left the MST before the trail descended a second time. It was then only a short walk through the woods to the highpoint.

Deer trail, man way, herd path—take your pick

Ta Da!!!

Some folks think another rock is a smidge higher…although I didn’t want to scramble up and balance on top, because….

I’d already paid my hiking dues for this highpoint!

Only one bird the entire hike, but it was a sweetie, posing for a photo.

Black and White Warbler

We were back at the car before the rain began. And to end a most delightful day, we saw “the sign of the covenant between the Lord and the earth, that never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.”

(Genesis 9)
