Lee County

We did a one-county road trip, leaving at 5:30am, because summer birding is best early in the morning. Birds first; highpoint later, because then excessive heat is irrelevant (except for our general well-being, but that’s why we have a cooler of beverages along with us).

NC’s most popular crop (tobacco) and an Eastern Kingbird

Ok, now it’s hot. Time for the highpoint!

We attempted to drive in on Aviation Road, but the NO TRESPASSING signs were daunting. So we circled around to the north and looked for that unnamed road off of Eakes, which turned out to no longer exist. BUT a new house was under construction nearby, with a little gravel road that dead-ended up in the woods. Perfect!

The barn was super-cool! The pulley wasn’t situated up in the loft for hay, so maybe it was meant to hoist an engine from a car?

And this was even cooler than the barn…

My helpful cousin who Knows These Things has identified this as either a ’79 or ’80 International Harvester Scout ii. The ’79 had square headlights, the ’80 had round. Wish I had looked!!!

It had this bumper sticker:

Why, yes, we are!
