New North Carolina Quest

In 2021 we did a Tar Heel Big Year, trying to see as many bird species as we could throughout our new home state (315 for Loren, 311 for me). The albums are finished!

While we were chasing birds, we also visited all 100 counties of North Carolina. We put pins in a map after we went to each county seat and courthouse.

50 pins are white (hard to see) and 50 are black. That’s what the map came with–no significance, except we did all the white-pin counties first and then the further-away-from-home black-pin counties.

(Still working on that album!)

Time for a new quest! We really enjoyed exploring all the corners of our new home state, so we wanted to repeat that experience, but with a different goal in mind:

High Points

We have decided to visit the high point of all 100 counties of North Carolina. From the coastal plain all the way up to Mount Mitchell in Yancey County at 6684′.

First step, some intel gathering: https://www.peakbagger.com/Default.aspx

Did you know I grew up mountain climbing with my family in Washington (state)?

Fortunately, North Carolina doesn’t have THOSE kinds of mountains!
I be an old woman now…Walking along with my sweetheart of 42+ years!

Mary & Loren in French Glen, Oregon (May 2022)

We hope the high points are drivable or walkable or short-hike-able, but we don’t really know at this point. Figuring it out is part of the fun!

So…..

Maps…. research….. adventure….
