Let’s look closer at what’s on the road.

Usually at the borders of counties there is a sign, but in a spirit of economy here we have that information painted directly on the road. Duplin County is to the west, and our target, Onslow County, is to the east.

And our highpoint is just off the road to the north.

Maybe here.
Although that looks more like a man-made brush pile.

Have you noticed that most of our highpoints are on the edges of the counties?

And usually the western edges

This makes sense in light of North Carolina’s location on the continent.

Lowest at sea level in the east, rising to the Appalachians in the west.

No photos of Onslow County birds on this trip, but during our NC 2021 Big Year we saw this adorable Piping Plover.

But that was at about 111 feet lower in elevation!
