(#46/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

This was another low-lying eastern county that didn’t offer much in a distinguishable highpoint. It’s somewhere out there in this farmer’s field.

I went around the gate to get a closer view, but I didn’t even go check out what’s growing out there. It was hot, and we were on our way home from a week at the beach.

I turned to head back to the car, and as I scooted around the gate, something caught my eye.

This is a beautiful “Powdered Ruffle Lichen.”
Lichens are a curious plant, made up of a fungus and algae living together in a close-knit relationship.

And this complex plant was by far the most interesting thing we saw at the Bertie highpoint!
Very interesting! What was it growing on? The curb?

#46 of 100! Thanks for a brief lesson on lichen. (& fungus). I know that I see lots of it, much tinier than your big sample.

#46 of 100! I am almost certain that I have seen smaller examples of that lichen (& fungus) around here, in the greater Houston area.
