The Wright Stuff

(#45/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

Kill Devil Hill in Kitty Hawk is a definite HIGHpoint in an otherwise very low-lying county.

We enjoyed a brief walk through the visitor center and a quick refresher on the accomplishments of Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Last year I read this book
and rated it 5*****.

Very readable, engaging account of the Wright Brothers’ perseverance and ingenuity which enabled them to conquer the obstacles to machine-powered, piloted flight, with an emphasis on personal and family dynamics gleaned from diaries and letters.

The route to the summit was very easy to follow!

Alfred Easton Poor (a Navy pilot in WW1 and 2) and Robert Perry Rodgers designed this striking monument in 1928, 25 years after the historic flight, and Orville Wright himself laid the cornerstone.

Not very many eastern highpoints have this kind of view!

To ensure that the monument isn’t susceptible to sand erosion, Kill Devil Hill was sodded, and shrubs and other grasses were planted to stabilize it.

And we didn’t even have to pay the $10 entrance fee, because Loren’s military veteran status gets us free entrance into all U.S. National Parks and Monuments!
