CURRITUCK

59′
(#44/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

On the map this looked like fun! We were vacationing with the family in Corolla and were pleased to learn that Currituck’s highpoint was a named “peak” called “Three Dunes”–right near the Harris Teeter where we had been shopping.

But alas, “Three Dunes” is in a gated community with no public access.

One enterprising highpointer paid the golf course fees and then made a detour at the 5th hole, but we were not so equipped or inclined to pretend we were golfers.

The closest we could get was through these bushes at the north end of the Harris Teeter parking lot.

From the bushes, looking across the golf course, we saw the homes perched atop Three Dunes. Their road is appropriately named “High Sand Dune Court.”

It’s always a little discouraging to not quite get there…

    1. Absolutely. We’ve never met any of them, but there’s a website where people leave descriptions of their searches and hikes. I don’t post there, but I’ve used the information to help us plan our trips–especially where there will be difficulty in finding the exact locations.
