Sandy Soil Soybeans

(#43/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

So where, exactly, is the highpoint out there?

So where, exactly, is the actual highpoint?

Somewhere out there in this farmer’s cropland, and we wouldn’t harm anyone’s livelihood by walking in to get closer. Some county highpointers will do these sites in the winter, when the crop has been harvested and the fields are just clods of dirt.

Looking closer, I thought these were peanuts, and I originally titled this blogpost, “Peanut Pasture” and was ready with North Carolina agricultural statistics that Edgecombe County is one the producers of our in-the-shell, munchable peanuts.

Cue the 7th inning stretch rendition of “Take Me out to the Ballgame…”

But luckily for journalistic integrity, I was recently introduced to a really fun (and free!) app called “SEEK,” produced by iNaturalist.

SEEK quickly identified my legume as a SOYBEAN.

Soybeans are the #2 crop in Edgecombe County, behind King Cotton.

And also in-the-shell munchable!
