Raven’s Roost

SURRY
Fisher Peak

(#34/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

From the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, we drive up a gravel road to begin this 4-mile hike.

In fact, half of the hike IS in Virginia!
Oh, no! ANOTHER GATE!
Phew! We may pass.
We catch a glimpse of our destination, Fisher Peak.
Now that is one fancy hunting blind!

No route difficulties…we just follow the road up up up.

We begin to hear and see Common Ravens, although I don’t carry my big, heavy zoom lens on these longer hikes. Here’s a stock photo:

The crow is a bird with a beak.

The raven is a beak with a bird.

Anything over a mile, we carry water with us, especially now in the warmer months.

Last little bit!

Now, in truth, we didn’t see any Ravens roosting on the towers, but it seems likely!

It’s nice to find our car exactly where we left it, and in the same condition.

Baby oak trees.

I always thought the nuts had to be buried in the ground by squirrels, but these have sprouted successfully right on top of the leaf litter.

Always something new to see when you’re out in nature!

  1. I will make note: a crow is a bird with a beak. A raven is a beak with a bird. Altho, I still can’t figure out how you could ascertain crow vs. raven from a distance.
