Formerly in Norman

RICHMOND

630′

(#27/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

In tiny Norman, the highpoint was in the midst of some trees in the back corner of the Methodist church property.

But as we got closer, it was clear the former access is now an impenetrable tangle.

Close enough.

Wandering around the main intersection of Norman we found this plaque:

According to the 2000 census there are only 18 families living in Norman, formerly known as Sprawl’s Old Field.

Or, according to this plaque the town is not called Norman at all, because it is FORMALLY known as Sprawl’s Old Field.

Either way, there is a lot of “former” in Norman besides the missing Norman Bank.

former gas station
former GARAGE

and more…

Well, that’s depressing, so I’ll close with some photos we took nearby as we birded at McKinney Lake and Fish Hatchery.

Lots of good habitat, with the water and “edge” between path and forest
Bald Eagle–not endangered any more!
Killdeer
Chipping Sparrow
harmless Northern Black Racer
