Washington Wilderness

WASHINGTON

50′

(#20/100 North Carolina county highpoints)

Ok, when I write “Washington Wilderness” this is what comes to mind.

My home state.

But alas, no.

Not THAT Washington.

This one.

The one you drive right through to get to the Outer Banks.

Of course we’ve explored Washington county for birding locations, especially during our North Carolina Big Year 2021.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Winter Wren, Chipping Sparrow, Purple Finches

But today we are after the highpoint, which is tucked away in the southwest corner.

Morris Tram Road

The highpoint is some 30 yards either to the north or south of the road, take your pick.

BUT. . . although the gate is unlocked, it is hunting season, it’s raining, and we’re not inclined to bushwhack.

Safety first!
