CHOWAN
a mere 52′ above sea level
(#16/100 North Carolina highpoints)
This is a photo of Brandon Smith.

Ignore the baby.
The reason Brandon’s photo was in the newspaper last July is because his field produced Chowan County’s first cotton blossom of 2022.

But this particular Chowan County cotton field belongs to a different farmer, and it is the dreary winter–but here we are, anyway, because out by that pole is the highpoint we seek.

Oh, but wait!
What’s on the OTHER side of County Line Road?

I present to you:
The not-so-humble
DAIKON RADISH

Turns out that these large radishes are an excellent, up-and-coming cover crop.
- They are BIODRILLS, breaking up compacted soil, increasing water infiltration
- They INCREASE ORGANIC MATTER in the soil
- They are LIVING MULCH, keeping the field weed-free
Absolutely delightful, don’t you agree?

I bought a large Daikon radish a couple of weeks ago, & finally chopped up the last bits of it. I compared the price of a dinky bunch of regular radishes & a large Daikon radish & bought the Daikon. Not disappointed.
